Stéphane Schreanen & Carla Arocha

20 Years and More

1 + 1 = 3 | Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen (2026)
Short documentary | 23 min | Directed by Alex Salinas | Commissioned by Studio Arocha-Schreanen and M HKA

This short documentary explores the origins of the collaboration between Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen, tracing how a shared artistic language emerged from parallel sensibilities that existed even before they met. Through conversations with the artists, fellow artist Dennis Tyfus, and an interview with curator and art historian Philippe Pirotte, the film explores collaboration as a conscious artistic position rather than a division of roles. Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen: Monograph as Projectforms a central thread within the film: a publication that weaves together twenty years of shared practice with earlier works and sketches, revealing affinities that predate the collaboration. The film offers an intimate reflection on co-authorship and on their artistic practice.

L’Orphelin - Luc Tuymans (Louvre, 2025)
Short documentary | Directed by Alex Salinas | Commissioned by the Louvre

Commissioned by the Louvre Museum, this short film documents a unique and temporary intervention by Belgian painter Luc Tuymans, who was invited to create a cycle of four murals directly onto the walls of the “rotonde Valentin,” a transitional space in the heart of the museum’s 17th-century painting galleries.

The film captures both the execution and atmosphere of an unprecedented gesture: the first contemporary wall painting made on-site in the Louvre in recent history. The film highlights the tension between permanence and impermanence, focusing on Tuymans’ conceptual approach to memory, erasure, and the museum as a layered historical space. It combines observational footage with subtle visual storytelling, staying true to the quiet power of Tuymans’ work and its fleeting presence within the museum walls, scheduled to be painted over by mid-2025.

The installation Five Car Stud (1969-72) by Edward Kienholz, seen by Luc Tuymans in the exhibition dedicated by Fondazione Prada to the work of Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin Kienholz in  2016-17, was seminal for the conception of this exhibition. In this work , Luc Tuymans recognises an aspect of overwhelming violence that makes it an emblematic piece in terms of the relationship between Baroque painting and contemporary art. Five Car Stud was included in the first version of “Sanguine” held at the MUHKA in Antwerp from June to September 2018, exhibited in an inflatable structure outside the museum that replicated the display with which Kienholz showed it for the first time at documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972. Alex Salinas (Antwerp, 1971) documented the assembly process in Antwerp and a conversation between Nancy Kienholz and Luc Tuymans during the installation.

The film was part of the “Sanguine” exhibition in Fondazione Prada, Milan

from 18 Oct 2018 - 25 Feb 2019
